The first in a series of films for Samsung x CNN, telling stories of inclusivity and accessibility. This one stars the amazing David Cowan, an ASL interpreter who soared to fame after interpreting for Beyonce at the Atlanta Pride Parade. But beyond that viral moment was a deep and influential purpose, which permeates David’s work…

After being born deaf and confronting the limits on accessibility throughout his childhood, David learned ASL in his college years and a world opened up to him. He was able to learn and share in new and profound ways, and he saw the promise in sharing that access. A gregarious force, he knew he could be a conduit for his community and decided to become an interpreter; a job that he’s evolved with over the past 30 years.

Today he works at courthouses and festivals, schools and seminars, with doctors, politicians and musicians. but no matter the content his goal is consistent — to give deaf people the access to the same information, and entertainment, as hearing people. It’s an ongoing journey, and David has stayed committed. I love people like him, who simply do the important work, attention or otherwise. Truly a bright and selfless light.

I’m very lucky to have met him — albeit virtually — and this film is an homage to him and the community he proudly represents. I’m so proud to help tell it, with help from a wonderful crew in Atlanta who bared with me across facetimes and timezones.
